1868-1945
As Japan modernized in the late 19th century, Western science led many to dismiss yokai as "superstitions." However, scholars began recording these legends as a form of "folklore studies" to preserve local heritage. Yokai were redefined from literal beliefs into cultural icons. During this time, many stories were adapted into children's fairytales, making yokai more approachable. They began to serve as educational tools, teaching moral lessons and social ethics through legendary cautionary tales.
