Iwate is the spiritual heartland of Japanese folklore, famously immortalized in The Legends of Tono. It is the home of the Zashiki-warashi, a child spirit believed to bring prosperity to households. The region is also dense with tales of Kappa (river imps) and Oshirasama, a deity born from a tragic legend involving a woman and a horse.
