Hokkaido's folklore is uniquely influenced by the indigenous Ainu culture. Based on the belief that spirits reside in all of nature, many entities are revered as Kamuy (deities) or nature spirits. The most famous is the Koropokkuru, a shy, tiny being living under butterbur leaves who is said to help humans. These legends reflect the wisdom of surviving in a harsh wilderness and a deep-seated gratitude toward the environment, creating a mystical atmosphere distinct from the rest of Japan.
